Promises of Eden eBook Charles Hash Reviews

What a great little Novelette. Full of promise!

It had everything needed to make a great story - punchy to-the-point prose, thought provoking themes, and mechanical grabber devices grafted to severed limbs! ... What? Mechanical grabber devices grafted to severed limbs isn't what is needed to make a great short story you say? I would like to argue that fact, because it was awesome.
Promises of Eden by Charles Hash offers a frightening glimpse into an alien post-apocalypse. This scenario is worse than any zombie apocalypse I've read. Aliens have conquered Earth and enslaved the human race, as they have on countless other planets.

Slaves live under miserable conditions in the mining tunnels, and they don't even have the option of committing suicide, thanks to the scientific advances of the alien technology. Escape is impossible, or is it?

Hash has created a number of diverse alien races, with great detail. I felt the confinement of the slaves, as if I was suffering alongside with them. If you are claustrophobic, this story will leave you breathless.
'Promises of Eden' is a quick read. The story takes place after an alien invasion. Humans are forced to slave for the invaders by working in mines. The idea is great. The execution is also well done. I only wished it had been a bit longer. I wanted to learn more about Mike. What drove him to venture out of his assigned work place and what will happen to him next.

While the story was short, it still gave me an idea of the author's talent and I will certainly read more of his work.
I didn't know what to expect walking into the book. They style is rough, the grammar isn't always the greatest(But it is solid, I am not disparaging the writing, you can tell it's the style.), but damn me if I wasn't compelled to keep reading it. He does an excellent job with his characters, showing complex emotions and such. Being a visual thinker, I saw this as a conglomeration of several different styles transposed beautifully one atop the other. And I feel like the author has magic he's not sharing, because he put a spell on me when I read it. *I received this book from the author in exchange for a honest review.*
Like the other tales I've read by this author, this is a beautifully written and highly enjoyable bit of soul-crushing prose. I mean that in the nicest way possible. It's not easy to pull off, yet Mr. Hash seems to have a talent for it.
To call this an atmospheric horror is a bit if an oversimplification, but at it's core that is what this is. The claustrophobic description of the situation the main character finds himself in at the beginning is a perfect setup for what becomes a fast swinging pendulum between hope and desperate futility.
It's a rather quick read. Perfect for a lunch break or (if you're brave enough) right before bed.
